editing and mentoring for writers
I work with novelists and life writers as an early reader, mentor and developmental editor.
I’m always happy to hear from writers. I love writers! Please get in touch to suggest a collaboration.
Here’s a breakdown of the ways I tend to work and an idea of costs, and here’s a piece about the craft of developmental editing, as I see it.
I’ve worked with writers including Emily Haworth-Booth, Siya Turabi, Reuben Lane, Toni Lötter, Ania Card, Jarred McGinnis, Jet MacDonald, Gemma Seltzer and Kate Murray-Browne.
I have some spaces at a lower rate for people on low incomes – feel free to ask.
I don’t do:
ghostwriting
copy editing
academic or specialist non fiction
self-publication processes
Some words from the author Gemma Seltzer about our work together:
“I loved the collaborative nature of the process: we entered the world of the book together and, side by side, we made decisions on characters and structure. Chris' ability to reflect back to me the book I'd been writing was done with such insight, generosity and clarity that I could suddenly see exactly what was needed and how the story could shift and evolve.
Chris has impressive stamina and focus for this kind of work - shaping a book - which helped me sustain that same focus too. From our first phone call, her approach allowed me to take my writing more seriously than ever before. I increased my writing productivity too. Between our meetings and to meet the deadlines we set I could suddenly edit at speed! I could rewrite whole scenes in a morning! I knew exactly what I needed to do! I genuinely don't think I would have completed a draft of my novel without Chris' gentle guidance and support. As may be clear, I highly recommend Chris' services.”
